Travel Shot: Walking on Water
Travel can bring unexpected surprises in life and in photography. Many times the best photographs are unexpected. You can try to prepare for the perfect shot, but it doesn’t always work out.
Sometimes you have to just go with the flow and accept the situation you are given. You won’t always have the desired lighting and the weather won’t always cooperate. The best advice I can give is to just show up with your camera and an open mind.
If you don’t force things, you might be pleasantly surprised with the results.
That’s exactly what happened on this rainy day in February. We were visiting family in Arizona, where it rains maybe a few times a year, and woke up to buckets of water falling from the sky and powerful gusts of wind.
We took our camera gear out anyway, and made a trip to a place we knew nothing about. Once we got to the Yuma Territorial Prison, the rain let up and we were greeted with huge puddles that were perfect for reflections and ominous clouds in the background that made for an eerie scene in this unique, old prison.
